The horse behind the leader on the rail (3) is in the pocket and enjoys both the shortest distance to the finish and a horse in front to take the wind, but is boxed in and may not find room to advance. The horse behind the first-over horse (4) is second-over and is arguably in the best position to win.

Most harness races in America are at a distance of one mile and speeds during a race can be up to 40 miles per hour. The fastest Standardbred in the world is Bulldog Hanover who paced a mile in 1:45.4 (that's one minute, forty five and 4/5 of a second!).

Use the Correct Harness Slots

On rear-facing car seats, the shoulder straps should come through the car seat slots at or just BELOW your child's shoulders. On forward-facing seats, the shoulder straps should be at or just ABOVE the shoulders.

Consequently, statistics at most meetings show that horses breaking from the inside four posts win more than their fair share of starts while horses breaking from post 8 and outward capture far fewer races.

Seat Position

Young jockeys are often taught to ride in the 'martini glass' position. The lower leg is straight replicating the stem of the glass. The thigh is held at a diagonal angle and the body is horizontal to mimic the shape of a cocktail glass.
